I’ve watched plenty of movies in my time. Some have been great and others have starred Melissa McCarthy.
And whilst most people who know me (including the entire team at O’Shea and Dyer Townsville Law Firm) are immediately aware of my fascination with old, prolific, male singers - I had not yet delved into films that explore this topic.
This is why ‘Walk the Line’, a film that explores the life of Johnny Cash really struck a chord.
So yes, that is that.
Johnny Cash is my latest subject of research.
Born in Cleveland County to a father who was disappointed that his brother had died and not him, Cash was destined to endure the stains of a few Daddy Issues. He was a severe alcoholic and was thoroughly addicted to amphetamines and barbiturates.
There is no doubt that Cash created an outlaw image for himself. The several hundred acres of National Forest that were burnt down under the influence of some pills, or the suspected heroin that was supposedly smuggled from Mexico within his guitar case may have contributed to this image. But he was Johnny Cash and the world enjoyed the romance of it all.
Despite his extensive criminal history, he never served a prison sentence.
And I think it was the fact that he knew this that inspired him to perform and record albums at various prisons across the country.
He stood on stage as they watched him from below. He was dressed to the nines (in ‘Cash’ blac’) and they wore their prison uniforms. He was free, and to them freedom was a long-lost friend.
